The Province of Northern Karelia (Finnish: Pohjois-Karjalan lääni, Swedish: Norra Karelens län) was a province of Finland from 1960 to 1997.
It was established in 1960 when it was separated from the Province of Kuopio. In 1997 it was reunited with Kuopio and togeather with the Province of Mikkeli it was merged into the new Province of Eastern Finland.

Karelia (historically also Swedish Karelia) is a historical province of Finland. It refers to the Western Karelia that during the second millennium have been under western dominance, religiously and politically. Western, i.e. Finnish Karelia is separate from Eastern, i.e. Russian Karelia, which was dominated by Novgorod and its successor states from the 12th century onwards.
The name is Karjala in Finnish and Karelen in Swedish. Karelia borders to Uusimaa, Savonia and Ostrobothnia. It is also bounded by Russia and the Gulf of Finland.
