Kyrgyzstan flag 10 x 15 cm
Kyrgyzstan, variously transliterated, also Kirgizia or Kirghizia, officially the Kyrgyz Republic, is a country in Central Asia. Landlocked and mountainous, it is bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west, Tajikistan to the southwest and China to the east. The name Kyrgyz, both for the country and the people, means "forty girls" or "forty tribes", a reference to the epic hero Manas who unified forty tribes against the Mongols, as symbolized by the 40-ray sun on the flag of Kyrgyzstan.

The flag of Kyrgyzstan was adopted on 3 March 1992 by the Supreme Council of Kyrgyzstan (Jogorku Kenesh). It consists of a red field with a yellow sun in the center having 40 uniformly spaced rays. In the center of the sun is a red ring crossed by two sets of three lines, a stylized representation of the crown or tunduk of the traditional Kyrgyz yurt, a symbol replicated in many facets of Kyrgyz architecture.
The red background of the flag symbolizes bravery and valor, the sun represents peace and wealth, and the tunduk signifies the family home or, by extension, the universe. According to popular interpretations,[citation needed] the sun's 40 rays represent the 40 Kyrgyz tribes unified against the Mongols by the epic hero Manas.
