About YPF S.A.

YPF (originally Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales, Fiscal Petroleum Fields) is an Argentine oil company founded in 1922 and privatized in 1992 by Argentine President Carlos Menem, and bought by the Spanish firm Repsol; the resulting merger in 1999 produced Repsol YPF.
Esteban Rivera, 15 Apr 2012

In 1992, YPF was privatized. Later, in 1999 the Spanish company Repsol took control of 97.81% of the shares of YPF and became Repsol YPF. Finally in 2012, 51% of the shares of YPF were expropriated by the Argentine government.

When the company was privatized in 1992 "YPF" stopped to mean "Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales", but the acronym YPF was preserved as a name of its own right, because it was a company very well known in Argentina. It became "YPF S.A.".

Flag

The flag of YPF is blue with the word "YPF" in white capital letters. It is the company´s logo in a piece of fabric. This logo is a redesign made in 2008 of the previous one with changed colors. The new colors were chosen in order to recall the blue and white of the Argentine flag. The redesign was made by the company Fontana Diseño of Graphic Design.

YPF old emblem

[The YPF logo used before the 1992 privatization was] a white circle bearing 2 blue rings, the outer of which edged the circle and within the inner was the black letters "YPF" amended to fit the shape of the circle.
Neale Rosanoski, 01 Feb 2008

The old emblem of the company was very similar to the ones used by several State's owned companies in Argentina until the early 1990s. That was the name, or acronym, of the company in black letters over a white field sorrounded by an "Argentine flag ribbon" made by three circles sky blue, white and sky blue.

Before the privatization of YPF in 1992, its fleet of tankers used this old logo in a shipping line flag
