Flag of Tuzla

The flag of Tuzla, in use since the late 1990s, is vertically divided blue-yellow (7:2) with the coat of arms, outlined in white, in canton.
The colors are from the national flag, while the white outline symbolizes salt.

Coat of arms of Tuzla

[Municipal coat of arms]

Coat of arms of Tuzla - Image by Željko Heimer, 31 January 2008

The coat of arms was originally adopted by Decision Odluka o amblemu (znamenju) Opštine Tuzla (text), adopted on 23 April 1959 by the People's Committee [Municipal Assembly] and published in the Municipal official gazette Narodni odbor Opštine Tuzla (Službeni glasnik). It seems that the emblem was designed a few years before, as the inscribed years indicate, and that it may have been used in connection with the celebrations of the millenium of the town. It includes in the chief (where now "TUZLA" is inscribed) the years "950 - 1950" and the name "Tuzla" is in the central part of the ribbon in the base ; the name "Tuz" in sinister is not mentioned. The emblem has more abundant flames in the dish, specified to be 16 flame tongues. The tongues are said to represent the evaporating salt in the dish. Apparently, the arms was used in various color combinations, not specified in the Decision.
Afterwards, the emblem was used only with the year "950" in chief dexter, apparently in the 1970s and 1980s, when the millenium was way over), for instance on metal plaques (photo) showing the emblem, without "1950", but already with "Tuz" in sinister, and with more flames.
The current design was adopted after 1990, probably around 2002, when the flag was adopted as well.

The coat of arms of Tuzla depicts the gates of the town with open doors in the city walls and a roofed gate tower above a dish with fire. In the chief is the town's name "Tuzla" and in the ribbon flanking the sides the historical names of the town, "Soli", "Salines", "Memlehai-Zir" and "Tuz", and the year of founding, "950".
The design of the coat of arms is credited to Dragiša Trifković.
