Municipality

The municipality of L'Anse Saint-Jean (1,201 inhabitants in 2016; 50,678 ha) is located in the heart of the Saguenay fjord.

L'Anse Saint-Jean was first settled by Louis Beaulieu, from the  Society of Jesus, and a few Montagnais, who stayed only one year because of the harsh weather. In 1837, the Société des Vingt-et-un started the exploitation of the local forest resources. Most colonists came from Baie-Saint-Paul, Les Éboulements, and La Malbaie.

Current flag

The municipality has adopted a new logo in 2016, and the flag is white with this new logo. Picture taken by me on the harbour in July 2019.

I saw the flag flying on a July 2005 show of L'Épicerie, on Radio-Canada. You can see it between 0:50 and 1:00 minutes (after the 44 sec commercial) at Radio Canada

It uses a newer logo than the flag reported by Harrington via myself.

The municipal logo represents the local landscape. In the foreground is represented river Saint-Jean and the emblematic
roofed bridge, built in 1929. The background shows the Saguenay fjord and the mountains lit by the sun.

The same landscape is represented of the reverse of the $1,000 banknote used from 1954 to 1992. Oddly enough, the inhabitants of L'Anse-Saint-Jean were not informed and discovered the image of their village on the banknote only in 1972 - which is not so unexpected since these banknotes were little used.
