About the flag

According to Pedersen's Flaggor i färg, 1973 [ped73], the flag of the Chilean Minister of Defence is blue with a large coat of arms centered on the flag.
Marcus Wendel, 15 September 1999

Also according to the Album des Pavillons [pie90] and William Crampton's The Complete Guide to Flags [cra89].
Randy Young, 30 April 1999 and Ivan Sache, 2 May 1999

At the official website of the Chilean Ministry of Defence the flag shows two shades of blue.
Dov Gutterman, 5 August 2002

This flag was not shown in Flaggenbuch [neu39].
Ivan Sache, 9 April 2001

The Ministry of Defense is a modern flag and the arms must be the modern ones and not the 1905 or 1939 ones.
Jaume Ollé, 4 October 2002

Navy Minister (pre-1932)

[Flag of Minister of War]
image by Željko Heimer, 15 December 2005

Blue flag with a white fouled recumbent anchor. The 1939 Flaggenbuch [neu39] gives different drawing than the 1926 Flaggenbuch [d9e26], so maybe this one is not particularly faithful, nevertheless.
Željko Heimer, 15 December 2005

Flaggenbuch [neu39] showed a flag similar to this, as "Flagge des Marineministers" (Flag of the Minister of Navy). The anchor is different, being smaller and thinner, with a mirorred fouling.
Ivan Sache, 9 April 2001

It seems that the War and Marine Departments were often in the charge of a single minister; I found a reference to the establishment of the position of Minister of War and Marine in 1887. That would presumably account for a flag bearing an anchor for the War Minister, but the date would seem to have to be before March 1932.
Joe McMillan, 9 October 2002

By Law No. 5.077 of 5 March 1932, the Departments of War and Marine and the Sub-Secretariat of Aviation, a branch of the Ministry of the Interior, were merged into a single department of state, which was denominated Ministry of National Defense. This Ministry thus continued to be composed of the sub-secretariats of the Army, Marine, and Aviation. It is in the charge of a secretary of state denominated Minister of National Defense, who is the representative of the President of the Republic and the immediate chief of the institutions that comprise the armed forces and the forces of order.
