The village of Benešov is situated on a plateau of the Drahany Higlands between the tops of Paprč (721m) and Skalky (735m). The first verified documentation about Benešov dates back to 1362. The community is also found on the map of Moravia and Silesia from 14 th century. There used to be deep and barely accessible woods in the region. In 1078 it was given to a Premonstratensian monastery. The prelates of it summoned glass blowers from Germany who started glass-making at the place where now there is the Pavlov yard. A village called Benýška was built there for the glass blowers, as verified by an inscription in the yard. Later on the village petered out.
Benešov originated from either a fortified settlement or a yeomanship with agricultural outbuildings. In the year 1610 the settlement included even twenty houses and had its own seal with a running hart on it. After abolishing the monastery a religious foundation was established, thanks to which a church was built in that very place. It was consecrated on 11th November1787. Both this church and the cast-iron cross in front of it are protected as national cultural monuments.
The eastern part of the village consists of a local part, Pavlov, based in 1755 together with a yard near the pond. This yard used to serve as a collateral seat of the monastery. In the part of Pavlov the new chapel was built and consecrated in 1994.
Benešov has charming surroundings from the Nature Reserve of Pavlov's wet grounds to protected regions of Kořenec, where the painter Řehořek came from and the region of Horní Bělá.
