There is a better coat of arms at this page, with information about the town:
Horní Benešov was a municipal mining town mentioned in connection with mining activities in the 13th century. The original name of the town was Bnešov. The name was renamed Horní Benešov as late as in 1926. The Deed of Foundation was dated 11 April 1253. Historical annals mentioned existence of Benešov as a mining settlement in 1226. In 1271 Přemysl Otakar II confirmed the right of Opava citizens to silver mines next to Benešov. This privilege was renewed in 1298 by his son Václav II. The mines in Horní Benešov ranked among the oldest silver and lead mines in the region of Bruntál. The first information about the mines dated back to 1247. The mines flourished most in the 16th century. An idea to found the town was submitted by Beneš II from Úvalno - son of Vok I. The Deed of Foundation was destroyed during devastating march of Matyáš Korvín, Hungarian king, in 1474. A Latin copy hereof preserved only in Land and Duties register of Brandemburk of 1535. Municipal privileges were confirmed by a deed issued by Lady Barbora, Duchess of Opava, Ratiboř and Krnov in 1506. During Hungarian invasions in 1474 Horní Benešov was destroyed and privileges were renewed at the beginning of the 16th century. In addition to the ore mining, metal and textile industry contribute to economic development of the town.
Number of inhabitants by 31.12. 2000: 2481.
