Municipality of Kreuzau Coat of arms

Modified by Pete Loeser, 22 September 2011

Description of coat of arms:
In a golden (=yellow) shield is a black, rampant lion tongued red. The black chief is divided by a golden (= yellow) cross.
Meaning:
According to source the lion is taken from the arms of the Dukes of Jülich, who ruled the area for many centuries. The lion is also seen on the oldest 14th century seal of Kreuzau. The cross appears in the second seal, dating from 1543. The cross was placed above the shield, not in the shield. The cross is a canting element (Kreuz=cross) and the local distinguishing mark.

Flag and coat of arms were approved by Minister of Interior of Northrhine-Westphalia on 20 April 1964.
