Shield Or; issuant from base a triplemount Azure, the outer peaks crowned by a linden twig with two leaves each; above a knight in blue armour coated Argent with sword and a shield Azure, charged with a lion barry of Gules and Argent, the knight is mounted on a sinister facing horse Argent bridled Gules.
The town was founded around 1300, and the oldest known seal of Grebenstein with prints from 1322 already displayed the Landgrave of Hesse, as his shield displays the arms of Hesse. The small linden leaves are probably the proper symbols of Grebenstein, before it became a city. All the later six seals until the 18th century display the knight with minor divergences. The pattern was recognised as coat of arms since 1605 (Siebmacher).
The arms were approved in 1939 by Oberpräsident (of Hessen-Nassau?), based on a draft of Otto Hupp.
