Ortenberg Coat of Arms

The shield is divided per pale into gold (= yellow) and silver (=white). The dexter side displays a black eagle. The sinister side displays a red castle (actually on a green hill). The castle on the flag gives a very naturalistic presentation.
Meaning:
The village beneath Ortenberg castle was seat of a court and a bailiwick of the Ortenau in the middle ages. The first seal of the court from 1488 already displays the castle as a canting element besides a rampant lion. The lion probably belonged to the Palatinate, because Ortenberg together with half the Ortenau was pawned to the Palatine Electorate. Seals from the 16th and 17th century display an eagle, probably an imperial eagle, side by side with the castle, because the Ortenau had been released by the Holy Roman Empire. In the 19th century a shield with the castle on the dexter side and a waxing crescent with face, probably a local symbol, on the sinister side was used. The current pattern is based upon the court seal from the late 16th century.
