Shield Azure a key Argent in pale.
Meaning:
The first main seal from the 13th century displayed a gate with embattled wall and three towers topped by crosslets. The shield is supported by two griffins rampant Argent winged Or, armed and tongued Gules. Beneath the shield is a golden scroll with black inscription "SPQST" (= Senatus Populusque Stadensis)-
