Description

The black-white-red flag with a white border. Used to request a pilot. Illustrated in Crampton 1990 p. 42 (which is a copy of Meyers Konversationslexikon 1912, vol. 4, facing p. 799), National Geographic 1917 p. 350, no. 603.

The Allerhöchster Präsidial-Erlass of 4 July 1867 gives a verbal description of the pilot flag (flag to call for a pilot [Lotsenrufsignal]) together with proportions: "A merchant flag [black-white-red] of smaller format with a white border of the width of a single stripe, that is 1/5 of the flag."
