Presentation of Navalacruz

The municipality of Navalacruz (264 inhabitants in 2006; 4,984 ha; municipal website) is located 45 km southwest of Ávila Province, in the Alberche valley.

Navalacruz is located in the Navas de Ávila, navas meaning here "a flat land surrounded with mountains". The villages of the region seem to have been founded around 1110 by Blasco Ximenez upon request of King Alfonso VI (1040-1109) and to have been subsequently resettled by Gil Blázquez around 1350.
The population of the village remained constant (around 1,000) from 1960 to 1960 and dramatically decreased in the last quarter of the 20th century (700 in 1970, 453 in 1981, 325 in 1991).

On 30 August 2010, the municipality of Navalacruz awarded the title of "Favourite Son" to Iker Casillas (b. 1981), the goal-keeper of the Spanish football national team winner of the UEFA European Championship in 2008 and of the FIFA World Cup in 2010. His grand parents still live in the village while his parents emigrated to Madrid long ago. Iker Casillas is nicknamed - among others - "The Navalacruz Angel" (Ángel de Navalacruz).
