Presentation of Herrera de Alcántara

he municipality of Herrera de Alcántara (253 inhabitants in 2019; 12,181 ha; municipal website) is located on the border with Portugal, 100 km west of Cáceres.

Herrera de Alcántara, part of the region located between Alcántara and Valencia de Alcántara, was assaulted by the Christians starting in 1167, to be definitively reconquered in 1220.
The Commandery of Herrera, first mentioned on 1254, included the towns of Herrera and Cedillo.
Herrera thrived in the 18th century due to the river port established on the Tagus, which allowed the shipment of goods to England via Lisbon.
