The chestnut is an important element of the local economy, recalled by the Chestnut Festival, celebrated since 1986 on the second Saturday and Sunday of November, in turn in Folgoso (even years) and in Seoane (odd years). The other elements already appeared in the former coat of arms, described below.

Government of Galicia, 1999), shows the previous coat of arms of Folgoso de Courel, with the chestnut replaced by the Cross of Santiago flanked by two scallops argent.

This coat of arms was indeed approved by the Government of Galicia on 15 September 1994 (Decree No. 280, published in the Galician official gazette on 22 September 1994), with the following description (in Galician):

"Cortado encaixado.
The Cross of Santiago recalls that Folgoso de Courel belonged to the Commandry of Barra. The peaks represents the mountain range known as Serra do Courel while the waves represent rivers Lor and Lózara, which water the municipality.
