Presentation of Las Herencias

The municipality of Las Herencias (798 inhabitants in 2018; 9,073 ha; municipal website) is located 100 km west of Toledo and 15 km south-west of Talavera de la Reina. The municipality is made of the villages of Las Herencias and El Membrillo.

Las Herencias was already settled in the Calcholithic, as evidenced by the archeological site of Los Castillos and brook Manzanas. The latter site, inhabited from 3,000 BC to the 1st century BC, was registered as an Archeological Zone of cultural interest by Decree No. 32, issued on 30 March 1993 by the Government of Castilla-La Mancha and published on 21 April 1993 in the official gazette of Castilla-La Mancha, No. 28, pp. 2,056-2,058 (text). Two funerary steles excavated from the site are shown in the Santa Cruz Museum in Toledo (T. Chapa Brunet & J. Pereira Sieso. 2016. La estela de guerrero de Las Henrencias (Toledo). ARPI 04-2016,367-367).
During the Roman colonization, the population moved down from the hilltops to the plain; the Pompajuela estate, located 2 km east of the village, belonged to Pompey, an affluent Roman senator from Talavera de la Reina.

After the Christian reconquest, a fortress was erected in Los Castillos; subsequently ruined, the castle fell down into the river at the end of the 18th century.
Formed in the 14th century, the urban nucleus of Las Herencias progressively attracted the inhabitants of the neighboring settlements, such as Aleanueva de Rodrigo, of Visigoth origin, La Peña, and Pompejuela, which were progressively abandoned.
