Presentation of Pozal de Gallinas

The municipality of Pozal de Gallinas (526 inhabitants in 2009; 3,520 ha) is located in the south of Valladolid Province, 50 km from Valladolid.
Pozal de Gallinas was mentioned for the first time in 1154/1164 via a villager named Pedro Abad. In 1265, Posal de Gallinas is listed among the parishes belonging to the abbey of Medina del Campo. In 1402, Infant Ferdinand granted the village to the Mejorada monastery.

In 1864-1867, the Poor's Republic (República de los Pobres) was established in the abandoned village of Pedro Miguel; some 1,600-2,000 people maintained a self-managed rural community based on the utopian ideal of Charles Fourier (1772-1837). The ruins of the phalanstére are locally known as El Torreón.
