Presentation of Torrelobatón

The municipality of Torrelobatón (506 inhabitants in 2009; 6,650 ha) is located in the center of Valladolid Province, 30 km from Valladolid.

Torrelobatón is mostly known for its castle, rebuilt in the 15th century by the Enriquez, Admirals of Castile. On 21 February 1521, the revolted Comuneros besieged the town and seized it four days later; another two days later, the defenders of the castle surrendered. In April 1521, a huge army gathered by the Royalists headed to Torrelobatón; Juan de Padilla, the Comuneros' leader, withdrew from the castle on 23 April under the Royalist threat. The Comuneros were eventually defeated in the Battle of Villalar and their leaders were executed.
