Symbols of Fresno de Sayago

The flag and arms of Fresno de Sayago are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 30 January 2003 by the Municipal Council, signed on the same day by the Mayor, and published on 11 February 2003 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 28, p. 2,312 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular flag with proportions 2:3, made of two horizontal stripes with proportions 3:4 and 1:4, the upper stripe white with a red saltire throughout and the lower stripe green.
Coat of arms: Per fess, 1. Argent a crozier gules and the flag of Zamora per saltire, 2. Vert an ewe argent. The shield surmounted with a Royal crown closed.

The symbols were designed by Vicente Tocino Letrado and Tomás Rodríguez Peñas. Since no evidence of any historical seal or coat of arms was found, a brand new coat of arms was designed. According to a document dated 28 August 1258, King of Castilla y León Alfonso X granted to the Bishop of Zamora and the San Salvador church a privilege exempting their shepherds to pay tax when entering Fresno de Sayago. Accordingly, the coat of arms represents the power shared by the king (gules and argent, the colors of Castilla y León) and the bishop (crozier and flag of Zamora). The ewe on a field vert recalls that the rich pastures of Fresno favoured sheep breeding, which was more profitable than agriculture, and wool production (municipal website; La Opinión de Zamora, 1 June 2003).
