James Blish (1921-1975) is a well known US-based science fiction author;
his 1966 science fiction short story
“How

1. The text includes 5 occurrences of the word
"banner" (excl. the
title) and one of the word "flag"
— all metaphorical, lacking any reference to actual vexillological
objects.
