Finalists in competition to design a county flag for North Riding
These six finalists have been revealed in the contest to design a county flag for the North Riding of Yorkshire.

The competition to produce a flag for the North Riding – the area which takes in Mickle Fell, the highest point in Yorkshire, in the north-west of the county, across to Middlesbrough, down to Filey Brigg and over to York – was launched last January. The six shortlisted designs were selected from numerous entries by a panel of judges, for everyone to vote for their favourite.

Voting closes on April 2.

The flag is green, divided by a blue centred cross fimbriated yellow. In the centre of the flag is a Yorkshire rose, i.e. Argent seeded Or and barbed Vert.

A yellow edged blue cross recalls the pattern of the arms borne by the North Riding Council from 1928-1974 and the colours of the arms (yellow stars on a blue background) attributed to local saint, Wilfrid an important figure in the region’s early history. The cross is set against a green field and in combination the three colours allude to the North Riding’s natural features; the green representing the large tracts of the famed North Yorkshire Moors National Park, while the blue and yellow reflect the North Sea coastline and such rivers as the Swale, Tees and Esk. The rose represents Yorkshire and also featured on the coat of arms of the former North Riding Council. The flag was chosen by a public vote, following a competition to design a flag for the North Riding which was launched on Wednesday 16th January 2013 in the Teesdale Mercury newspaper. Six designs were selected from numerous entries, by a panel of judges, for everyone to vote for their favourite design.
