Presentation of Gunja

Gunja is located 75 km south of Vukovar, on river Sava that forms the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. It has just over 5,000 ihnabitants living in a single large village. Ethnically, some 65% of them are Croats, about 14% Bosniaks, 4% Serbs and yet over 10 other different minorities; religiously, some 65% are Catholic, 30% Muslims. Gunja is considered to have the oldest mosque in Croatia, that is, the oldest built after the liberation of Slavonia from the Ottomans in 1700.

Flag of Gunja

The symbols of Gunja are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Gunja i načinu i uvjetima njihove uporabe i zaštite, adopted on 5 May 1995 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 23 August 1996 in the County official gazette Službeni vjesnik Županije Vukovarsko-srijemske, No. 6.

The flag (photo) is in proportions 1:2, light blue with the coat of arms, bordered yellow, in the middle.

The coat of arms is described in Article 8 of th Decision as follows:

The coat of arms of the Municipality of Gunja is in a shield shape. On the blue background is a golden-yellow figure of St. James.
The arms, "Azure St. James stantant holding a staff in his dexter and a scroll in his sinister and wearing a bag ensigned with a scallop all or", refer to the St. James church, built in Gunja in 1849. The scallop on the bag is the traditional ecclesiastic attribute of St. James.
