Flag of Novi Marof

The symbols of Novi Marof are prescribed by Decision Odluka o opisu i uporabi grba i zastave Grada Novog Marofa, adopted on 30 March 1998 by the Town Assembly and published in the County official gazette Službeni vjesnik Varaždinske županije, No. 5. Decision Odluka o opisu i uporabi grba i zastave Grada Novi Marofa, adopted on 22 December 1999 by the Town Assembly and published on 11 February 2000 in Službeni vjesnik Varaždinske županije, No. 1, invalidates the previous Decision.
Unlike the 2001 and 2006 Town Statutes, the current Statutes Statut Grada Novi Marofa, adopted on 14 July 2009 and published on 16 July 2009 in Službeni vjesnik Varaždinske županije, No. 23, now include the description of the symbols.

The flag is in proportions 1:2, yellow with the coat of arms in the middle.

Two different flags were hoisted on the Town Hall of Novi Marof as I photographed them, one in April 2001 and the new one in April 2003.
The old flag was white with the coat of arms; the road signs with the place name including the coat of arms were also changed from white to yellow in the same time. The flag hoisted in 2001 was not "white-washed" by the weather conditions, since the coat of arms was in well-preserved colours.

Former symbols of Novi Marof

The former symbols of Novi Marof were prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Novi Marof, published in 1994 in Službeni vjesnik Županije Varaždinske , No. 4. This was amended by Decision Odluka o izmjeni Odluke o grbu i zastavi Općine Novi Marof, published in 1995 in Službeni vjesnik Županije Varaždinske , No. 5, and superseded by the consolidated Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Novi Marof (pročišćeni tekst), adopted on 20 April 1995 and published on 7 June 1995 in Službeni vjesnik Županije Varaždinske , No. 9.

The commission for the public competition for the design of the coat of arms of was appointed by the Municipality Assembly. Headed by Ivan Rabuzin (1921-2008, a world renowned naive painter from Novi Marof), the Commission included Miroslav Klemm (an art historican at the Varaždin Town Museum, Pr. Stjepan Hajduk (history professor and Curator of the Varaždinske Toplice Museum), Ivan Tenodi, and Ivan Biškup (Varaždinske vijesti, 20 October 1993).

The flag is described in Article 4 of the consolidated Decision as follows:

The elongated rectangular field of the flag is divided in four parts, divided with white horizontal and vertical ribbons. The four fields of the flag are diagonally coloured blue and green. In the middle of the flag is the coat of arms of the Municipality of Novi Marof, within a white outline inscribed "Novi Marof".
The ratio of the width to the height of the flag is 1:2.
The diagonally set blue and green fields of the flag symbolize the blue sky above the green land.

The coat of arms is described in Article 3 of the consolidated Decision as follows:

The coat of arms of the Municipality of Novi Marof is composed of a painted shield, without the usual heraldic parts [probably meaning without any elements outside the shield]. The shield is in a semicircular shape with curved top edges.
The shield is divided horizontally in two parts. In the heart of the shield is a church tower with two windows and a high bulb-shaped belfry top as seen from askance. The tower is coloured silver and the belfry top blue.
On the right side of the top part of the shield is a ruined fortress, above which are five circles of the same size set in an arc. The fortress and the circles are silver on a red background.
On the left side of the top part of the shield is a river bridge with two semicircular arches and the sculpture of a saint on the centre of the bridge railings. Above the bridge are five circles of the same size set in an arc. The bridge and the circles are silver on a golden background.
On the bottom part of the shield are wavy stripes above which are semicircular clouds. The wavy stripes are interchangeably green, golden and blue, while the clouds are silver.

The basic element of the coat of arms of the Municipality of Novi Marois the tower of the parish church in Remetinec, the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary - the Queen of the Holy Rosary, one of the most important Croatian historical buildings. The silver circles above the tower symbolise the rosary, the church's namesake.
In the top right part of the arms is the symbol of the ruins of the Greben-grad fortress, one of the most important fortified medieval Croatian cities, whose owners were also the owners of the lands on which the town of Novi Marof subsequently developed.
In the top left part of the arms is the symbol of the old bridge on river Bednja in Presečno, locally called the "Bridge between the Saints", marking the border between [former] Varaždin County and Križevci County.
In the bottom of the arms the wavy stripes symbolize the cultivated fields.
