Presentation of Dugo Selo

The Town of Dugo Selo (lit., "Long Village"; 14,300 inhabitants in 2001, 8,880 in the town of Dugo Selo) is located some 20 km due east from Zagreb. Its Town status, granted in former Yugoslavia, was downgraded in the 1993 reform to the Municipality status, and re-established in 1997.

The symbols of Dugo Selo (images) are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Grada Dugog Sela, adopted on 30 June 1998 by the town Council and published on 6 June 1998 in the Town official gazette Službeni glasnik Grada Dugog Sela, No. 5. The Decision was superseded by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Grada Dugog Sela (text), adopted on 30 October 2007 by the Town Assembly and published on 20 November 2007 in Službeni glasnik Grada Dugug Sela, No. 9. The new Decision did not differ much in the determination of the coat of arms and included a regulation on the procedure and other details of granting the right to use the town coat of arms and flag to various institutions.
The symbols were approved on 19 May 1998 by the Ministry of Administration.

The flag (photo, Dugoselska kronika, No. 450, 2004) is blue with the coat of arms, bordered golden, in the middle.

The coat of arms of Dugo Selo is made of a triangular shield "Azure, issuant a crozier or, in chief dexter a mullet of six of the same, sinister a crescent argent".

The crozier refers to St. Martin the Bishop. It includes the depiction of the octagonal belfry of the old church of St. Marin at Martin Breg, dated 1209. The crescent and star are from the "oldest Croatian coat of arms", an element found in many old and new civic and family arms in Croatia.

Dugo Selo displays a vertical flag, somewhat lighter blue than usual, with a sligtly larger coat of arms, and with the inscription of the town's name under it.

Ceremonial flag of Dugo Selo

The ceremonial flag (photo, photo) is atypical, light blue bordered dark blue and golden with the coat of arms in the middle, a ribbon below it and golden tassels along the bottom edge. The ribbon is red with a white inscription of the town name.
The intricate ornament includes above the coat of arms the inscription "1209" and below it the Latin inscription "Terra sancti Martini". Both refer to the charter king Andrew II issued that year, in which he granted the "land of St. Martin" - the area of what is today Dugo Selo - to the Templars, being the first written mention of an inhabited area on the location.

The ceremonial flag must have been made at the same time the coat of arms and the flag were adopted (in 1998) since we know it from late 1998; however, as far as I am aware, it is not mentioned (as it is not at all unusual) in the 1998 Decision adopting the symbols (at least it is not mentioned in the updated 2007 Decision; we have not been able to find the original 1998 text yet).

Former symbols of Dugo Selo

The former symbols of Dugo Selo were prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi općine Dugo Selo, adopted on 21 March 1996 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 30 March 1996 in the Municipality official gazette Službeni glasnik općine Dugo Selo, No. 2.
It appears that the symbols were being discussed at the Ministry of Administration during the approval procedure, and were amended with the help of experts, yielding the present design.

The flag is light blue with the coat of arms, outlined in gold, in the centre of it.
The coat of arms is made of a purple-blue shield charged with a golden octagonal belfry with a green onion-shaped dome between a red mitre with a golden cross and ribbons and a silver goose with red beak and legs, and in the base a green mount with a silver wavy cotized bar.

The mitre refers to St. Martin the Bishop. It includes the depiction of the octagonal belfry of the old church of St. Martin at Martin Breg, dated 1209. The goose stands for the local domesticated fauna.
