Description

Tirat Karmel (meaning Karmel's castle / palace) is situated between Mount Karmel and the seashore just south of Haifa . Est. 1948 and has 20,000 inh.
In my visit on 3 september 2001, I did not see any flag above the city hall. However, a municipal emblem on a white flag was spotted above another municipal building. The municipal emblem was published in the official gazette (Rashumot), YP 690, 30 July 1959, for the then Local Council Tirat HaKarmel.

Mr. Shmuel Katoni, city clerk, wrote me:

  • the official name is now Tirat Karmel, replacing former names Tira and Tirat HaKarmel;
  • the Local Council was proclaimed on 1 Febuary 1951 (KT 153).

Dov Gutterman, 10 October 2001

Tirat Karmel on the sloops of the Karmel, almost touching Haifa from the south, and east to road 4. It became an Local Council in 1951 and municipality in 1992.
The name came from the Crusaders era town of St. Jean de Tyr and later the Arab village of Tira. The current town started as transitional settlement (Ma'aberet Tira) founded in 1949. Since there was another two more Tira, the suffix Karmel was added to reflect its proximity to the Karmel mountains.
