Overview

FIS ("Fédération internationale de ski" / "International Ski Federation" / "Internationaler Ski Verband") was founded by 14 national federations on 2 February 1924 in Chamonix, during the 7th Congress of the International Ski Commission, which had been founded on 18 February 1910 at Christiana (today Oslo, Norway). The Chamonix International Winter Sports Week, during which the FIS was founded, would be later recognized as the First Winter Olympic Games. Based at Oberhofen-am-Thunersee (Switzerland) and with 107 members, the FIS is in charge of cross-country, ski jumping, Nordic combined, freestyle skiing and snowboard (Olympic disciplines), as well as speed skiing, grass skiing and Telemark (non-Olympic disciplines).

The Flag

In March 2009, the flag of FIS was presented to the organizers of the 2011 World Championship of Snowboard, to be held at La Molina (Catalonia, Spain). The flag, unsurprisingly, is white with the FIS logo in the middle. The logo of FIS shows the three black letters "F", "I" and "S", separated by two "tracks", yellow and blue, respectively. The ® symbol placed near the "S" on the logo is omitted on the flag. I don't know when the current logo was adopted but I am quite sure that it was already in use in the Albertville Olympics, 1992.
