Overview

Gonfalone of Asciano, Siena province, in Tuscany.
From <www.radicedidue.com>: "GONFALONE.

The municipality has an area of 216 sq. km and 6,200 inhabitants. It received the municipal status in 1777. The abbey of Monte Olivetto Maggiore was founded in 1313 on the current municipal territory.
Gonfalone: Red flag with a white pale [vertical stripe in the middle], adorned with silver embroidery and charged with the municipal coat of arms surmonted with Comune di Asciano in silver. The gonfalone was prescribed by Decree of the President of the Republic, 5 June 1954.
Coat of arms: Since four centuries, the axe hold by a lion paw had been representing the working force of the municipality. Such an axe was used in Tuscany by woodcutters to prune and pull down trees. The axe [ascia] is probably canting for the name of the place. The coat of arms was prescribed by Presidential Decree, 12 October 1953.
