Ilpendam former municipality

Ilpendam is a former municipality in Noord-Holland province, in 1991 split between Waterland, Landsmeer and Purmerend.
Flags: rectangular red and black, with a yellow hoist-trangle reaching the fly, charged with a quartered lion of red and black.
adopted 2 Jun 1976 by municipal resolution.
The flag is based on the municipal arms. The form of the flag reminds of the lance pennon of Frans Banning Cocq, formerly Lord of Purmerend en Ilpendam (whose militia was eternalized by Rembrandt's "Nachtwacht").

Ilpendam Coat of Arms

[Ilpendam Coat of Arms] by Jarig Bakker, 24 Apr 2005, after image in the Koffie hag album
Granted 22 Oct 1817

Arms: quartered: 1 and 4 or a lion rampant noir; 2 and 3 or, a lion rampant gules.

This coat of arms is probably based on the arms of the Counts of Holland from the House of Hainaut (Henegouwen); the black lion is from Hainaut, the red lion from Holland. Possibly Ilpendam belonged to those Counts, e.g. Willem IV, before it came into the possession of the Lords of Egmond.
