Description of the flag

Estb: 1974. Location: One Tree Point Road, Whangarei.
Burgee: Pennant circa 1:2 (web image). Light blue field charged with:
"The red pattern on the MYBC club pennant (burgee) is meant to reflect the flame from the oil refinery chimney at Marsden Point with the white mark being representative of the chimney.

By way of explanation when the yacht club was formed back in the late 60s early 70s the clubhouse was located adjacent to the refinery at the entrance to the Whangarei Harbour. The skyline was at that time dominated by the refinery chimney and the flame that was constantly present. However, following substantial updates to the production facilities, this is no longer the case with the chimney now only showing a flame during a production fault condition at the refinery. Prior to the Northland commercial port facility (North Port) being constructed back in the early 90s where the early clubhouse stood the MYBC club was relocated to new premises (its current location) at One Tree Point approximately 4 km farther up the harbour.”

"Marsden Yacht Club was founded in 1974. . . . The change to the current name came in 1994, to give power boat owners in the area a club focus.”
