The settlement existed already in the first half of XIV Century.
1492 - city rights granted (and Columbus "discovered" the Bahamas)
1795 - Sawin under Austrian rule after third partition of Poland.
1809 - included in Grand Duchy of Warsaw
1815 - included in Congress (Russian) Kingdom of Poland
1863 - fights with the Russians during January Uprising
1869 - Russian s took away the city rights
1915 - withdrawing Russian troops burned the town
1921 - census shows the Jewish population of the town at 48%
1939 - (September) - big battle with invading Germans
1940 - creation of forced labor camp for the Jews
1942 - all Jews removed to the extermination camp in Sobibor. After
the rebellion there, local Wermacht unit captured 6 escapees near Sawin.
Sawin was the site of test on the V-2 rocket.
1944 - (July) Sawin was liberated by the Soviet Red Army.
Arms and flag adopted on March 24, 2000 (resolution # XX/128/2000).
"Arms: Sawin's Arms are based on the noble Coat of Arms "Rawicz" - a
crowned maiden in a red gown sitting on a black bear, all on a golden shield.
Flag: a "chessboard" in the colors of red and yellow with the Arms
in the middle."
