It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain green field.

Shield Or, five bees Gules in quincunx, in central chief a green cross fleury, Mural crown with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in lack upper case letters "S. BENTO DO CORTIÇO".
Meaning:
The cross is referring to the Avis Order, which controlled nearly the complete territory of the nowadays municipality. The golden colour is alluding to apiary and the local riches of honey. The bees are symbolizing the numerous beehives (Portuguese: Cortiços) in the village, which disappeared in 1819. Flag and arms were designed by Carlos Eduardo da Cruz Luna.

São Bento do Cortiço was one of the pre-2013 communes of Estremoz Municipality. It had 699 inhabitants in 2011 and covered 23,38  km².

The cross is referring to the Avis Order, the oil lamp to the Roman heritage.

Santo Estêvão was one of the pre-2013 communes of Estremoz Municipality. It had 74 (!) inhabitants in 2011, living on 33,58 km², a bit more than 2 inhabitants/;km².
