About the flag

Nickname

Dmitry Ivanov, author of this flag, told me a funny story about the adoption of Kurgan Oblast flag. During the discussion of flag project in Oblast Duma (parliament), the vice-speaker Viktor Tataurov strongly objected against it: «These are not the kurgans (barrows) on the flag! This is a woman, swimming on her back!» Regional newspapers repeated these words. So, the flag of Kurgan Oblast received the original unofficial nickname: «woman, swimming on her back».

The Kurgan coat of arms contains a further charge [apart from the mounds], but it doesn’t appear on the flag.

In the central part of the emerald (green) field is the “kurgan” emblem from the coat of arms of Kurgan Region: two silver kurgans (mounds), one behind the other, the silhouettes of the kurgans separated by an emerald contour. The reverse of the flag is a mirror image of its obverse.
