The flag of the town of Rough and Ready in California is black, with THE GREAT REPUBLIC OF written in white and ROUGH AND READY written in red on a white background on it. The history of the republic can be found at this site: http://www.roughandreadychamber.com/secession.html .

I wrote to the owner of the web site, the Rough and Ready Chamber of Commerce. In reply, I was sent a postcard showing the flag, and it is indeed as shown above, black with white lettering with a white "box" with the town name in red. They did not confirm if this is an official town flag, but stated that it is "flown daily over the blacksmith's shop." The blacksmith's shop is now a museum.
