Description of the flag

The municipal flag of Niles, Michigan is shown at www.flagsinternational.com/custom-flags.htm It is either dark blue or black, with a white shield in the center; in the shield is a smaller golden or orange shield with the name of the city and its nickname- City of Four Flags. Behind the smaller shield are the four flags referred to: Spanish Cross of Burgundy, US "Betsy Ross" flag, British Union Jack [post 1801 version- sic], and French fleur-de-lis on blue. The flags symbolize the history of Fort St. Joseph, whose site was in the area- French control 1691-1763, British 1763-1781, Spanish 1781-1783, and US 1783 on. There also seems to be a scroll with a motto underneath the flags and smaller shield, but I cannot read it.
