Description of the flag

Based on the the NAVA image at www.nava.org/.../Bismarck.jpg, the flag is a white over dark red horizontal bicolor with a "Spanish yellow" (Y+) border all around, apparently wider at the hoist. On the dividing line and offset to the hoist so that it touches the yellow border centrally (where it meets the horizontal dividing line) a blue disk containing an arched ear of wheat (stalk from ~10 o'clock to ~5 o'clock) and over it a white regular five-pointed upright star. From its upper hoist-side tip (which is also the ~10 o'clock position where the wheat ear ends meet) a (dark) red-fimbriated Spanish yellow tongue flowing to the lower fly becoming a thin yellow stripe set on the red panel. On the white stripe the word "Bismarck" set in bold dark blue sans-serif capitals with the "A" replaced by a Spanish yellow dark blue-fimbriated five-pointed upright star horizontally squeezed and on the thin yellow stripe the words "North Dakota" set in small bold dark blue serif capitals. I could find no significant occurrences of "flag" in www.bismarck.org nor any online reference to this flag apart from the NAVA report. It doesn't seem to be (widely) used.

An obituary in the 20 Dec 2005 online edition of the Bismarck Tribune states: "In 1986 he [Mark Kenneweg] won a contest, sponsored by the Tribune, to design the Bismarck city flag. The flag hung for many years in the Bismarck Civic Center, and one still adorns a wall in the mayor's office."
