Description of the flag

The new flag of Arlington County, Virginia was adopted on January 22, 2022 after a year and a half long process.

NAACP Arlington Branch President, Julius D. "J.D." Spain, Sr. had this to say:
"After a thorough 1 1/2-year process involving thousands of citizens in our community, we are thankful to our branch members, the County appointed Logo Review Panel, the County Board, and staff for their hard work and dedication. Raising a new flag in Arlington County exemplifies the practice and principles of social equality. As a non-partisan social justice and civil rights organization, we look forward to continued partnership with like-minded stakeholders, advancing tangible and productive outcomes for everyone in our community."

The flag is a white field with thin horizontal bars at the top and bottom of the flag. In the center is the county logo.

This is the flag of Arlington County located in northern Virginia, bordering on the District of Columbia, and contains the city of Arlington. The flag is yellow with the county seal in the center.

Here's some information that was sent to me by an official of the Arlington County government:

"The house symbolized in the circle is the Custis-Lee Mansion, located in Arlington Cemetery, which was originally the property of Robert E. Lee. It is also known as Arlington House. In the design, Arlington House is surrounded by dogwoods blossoms. As I'm sure you know, the dogwood is Virginia's state flower."
Randy Young, 19 September 2000

The flag was adopted in 1983. Designed by Mr. Wilcox, Deputy General Council, depart. of the navy. Central emblem is a stylized representation of the Arlington House. Leaves are in blue to prevent using a fourth color (the colors are yellow, blue and white).

In 2020, the County Board approved a process to replace the current County logo and seal, which depict Arlington House, The Robert E. Lee Memorial. For many residents, the home of the Confederate general is a painful representation of the slavery that took place in our region.

From February 12 to March 12, 2021 community members submitted more than 250 ideas for Arlington County’s new logo, which a volunteer Logo Review Panel reviewed and further developed with a consultant. Residents were invited to share feedback on the top five initial concepts between April 23 and May 26.

At the May 18 County Board meeting, the Logo Review Panel co-chairs shared an update on the new County logo. Based on community feedback, the Board requested to see more logo options for consideration.

A call for additional logo ideas was reopened and extended from June 3 to June 27, 2021. The Logo Review Panel took initial community feedback into consideration, especially on the number of colors and diversity of concepts as they reviewed artwork from both submission periods. After extensive consideration, the panel did not consider imagery with federal monuments, memorials, and facilities. They believe Arlington is a special and unique place that encompasses more than a federal presence.

Following this second round of community feedback, which will close on Sept. 3, the Logo Panel will present the top three logo concepts to the County Board for their final decision.

The County Board voted on the new logo Saturday, Sept. 18, 2021 — after more than 400 design submissions & 29,000 votes in two rounds of community feedback.

The chosen design represents Arlington’s close relationship with DC and Alexandria and echoes how the County was formed, as well as its Potomac River border on the east.

Fire Department

[Flag of Arlington County Fire Department] image by Randy Young, 15 October 2014

While researching, I came across the flag of the county's fire department. Photographs of an awards ceremony in 2012 contained the flag www.arlingtonmagazine.com/March-April-2012/Thirtieth-Annual-Valor-Awards.

The flag of the Arlington County Fire Department has a white field with the department's logo displayed in the center in dark blue and gold. Above the logo are the words "ARLINGTON COUNTY" in red sans serif letters, with the words "FIRE DEPARTMENT" below the logo in similar lettering.
