Description of the flag

The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) is the government agency responsible for safely and effectively operating all of the prisons and other adult correctional facilities throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. With roots dating back to the post-American Revolution period of the late 1700s, Virginia's is one of the oldest functioning correctional agencies in the United States. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia_Department_of_Corrections)

Unfortunately, I was unable to find a photograph or description of the VADOC flag online, so I contacted the department directly and was placed in contact with Ms. Alice Milner, a researcher and staff librarian for the Department of Corrections. After a few weeks of research, Ms. Milner was able to provide me with some of the department's internal documentation establishing the flag and its usage. Unfortunately, the majority of that information is copyrighted, as is the use of any imagery or graphics of the flag itself, requiring permission from the department's Policy Office.

The flag itself features three horizontal bars of dark blue-red-dark blue with the department's seal centered. Unfortunately I cannot get into the specifics of the dimensions and placement of the design elements on the flag.

Ms. Milner also mentioned that the VADOC seal and the flag were designed by an employee of the Department working in its Procurement Division. The previous department flag featured the department's previous seal, but there was no documentation available to be able to reconstruct either that seal or the flag design itself.
