About the commune

The municipality of Ovalle (98,089 inhabitants in 2002; 383,450 ha) is located 400 km north of Santiago and 90 km south of La Serena.

Ovalle was founded by a Decree issued on 22 April 1831 by the Coquimbo Provincial Assembly. The Assembly recognized the impossibility to manage from La Serena, the provincial capital, a vast area located between river Choapa and the country's northern border; accordingly, a new town had to be created in the Limari valley. The town had to be established at mid distance of Combarbalá and La Serena and mid distance of the sea and the Andes. It was eventually founded in the Tuquí area, on plots offered by Micaela Campos. The new town was named for José Tomás Ovalle Bezanilla (1778-1831), the Vice President of Chile who had passed away one month before the foundation of the town on 22 April 1831.
